The SWDSME (Saffron Walden & District Society of Model Engineers) was formed in 1982. We are a group of friends interested in all types of railways and model engineering, regardless of level of skill or knowledge.
We hold regular meetings, and there is a monthly newsletter featuring club news, members' projects and lots of other information.
Having moved to a site on the edge of Stansted. We have already established a 200 metre (650 foot) circuit of track, along with a station loop in the wooded area. Opposite our clubhouse is a storage shed and raised steaming bays. Members are able to run their own models or learn how to drive the club locos. We also hope to hold occasional public open days for people to come and have a ride.
For those who are interested in the details: The track is ground level, dual gauge (7 1/4" and 5"). Flat-bottom rail has been used where possible, although older bar-rail (including points) have been re-used from our previous site.
In normal running the maximum gradient of 1:85 is on a downwards section, with the maximum uphill gradient being around 1:100.
We welcome anyone who enjoys model engineering and/or railways. So why not contact us?
